The Burning Bed
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (October, 1980)
Author: Faith McNulty
Average review score:

A pioneering study in domestic violence
The 1984 NBC telepic with Farrah Fawcett probably got more attention than Faith McNulty's book on which it was inspired. In the realm of "Men, Women and Rape," still regarded as the definitive study of rape as an act of violence, "The Burning Bed" does likewise on the subject of domestic violence. Based on the 1970's trial of a battered wife and mother who doused her passed out, drunken husband with gasoline before sending him off in flames, McNulty calls attention to the shame and silence with which the subject of spousal abuse was given, even in that era. The author does a masterful job in detailing the victim's years of physical and mental abuse, so much and so many that triggered what we now call post-traumatic stress or battered wife syndromes. But without those clinical identifications and before it become vogue not to have to be beaten, the wife and mother here is charged with premediated murder, and her only legal defense then was a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. That that was the only plea victims of violence had, in modern history, is shameful unto itself, and McNulty's book doesn't pooh-pooh the subject and confronts it openly and critically. In many respects, the success of the TV adaptation overshadowed the actual book, and that's a shame. Even more than in the dramatization, the book delves into the deepest and darkest pits of domestic violence, brings it to light and commands the judicial system and private citizenry to demand that the matter become a public policy issue. Obviously, McNulty's position paid off. Now, unlike then, the victims of domestic crimes really do have a choice, and that choice no longer is solely physical retaliation against the perpetrator.

Business Math Essentials

Author: Robert J. Hughes

Bus. Math Essentials Ok!
After taking a course in Business Math. using this book, I am better prepared for the Business world. Only error I can find is that they have on occasion given incorrect answers in both the work areas of the book and the self-check answers which are located at the rear of the book.

I highly recommend this book to those who are either in a business math course or those who merely want to learn at their own speed.

Authors: Giles Emerson and Bettany Hughes
Average review score:

Very interesting book - I wish the series could be seen
This book is a great broad view of the sins of the city in London from the Roman Invasion through the Victorian Era - with interesting new tidbits thrown in. I wish that the series that this book was based on would be shown on the History Channel.

Congressional Abdication on War and Spending (Joseph V. Hughes, Jr., and Holly O. Hughes Series in the Presidency and leaDership Studies, No. 7)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (October, 2000)
Author: Louis Fisher
Average review score:

Convincing Case for the Congress to reassert it's Perogative
I read this book for a course on the US Congress. Louis Fisher paints a picture of a Congress that has lost it's will to fight the president for it's war and spending powers which are explicitly given to it in the Constitution. The book shows that up until President Truman, Congress had exclusive control over these powers. The president grabbed more power during war time, but then power went back to Congress in peace. Fisher Argues that since Truman congress has given up these power, or abdicated them, and no longer trusts itself to conduct the nations business.

Consciousness and Society: The Reorientation of European Social Thought, 1890-1930
Published in Paperback by Knopf (August, 1961)
Author: Henry Stuart Hughes
Average review score:

Hughes' history is both insightful and limited.
H. Stuart Hughes accepted a difficult job when he tried to write what has understandably become a classic history of social ideas about the generation which came to intellectual maturity between 1890 and 1930. Published in 1958, the discussions of the major philosophical and social theories of Max Weber, Sigmund Freud, and Emile Durkheim (among others) are explained, and the impact of these theoretical giants on one another is masterfully undertaken. Readers interested in the intellectual powerhouses of this time period are encouraged to read the history. The weakness of the book, however, lies in what Hughes failed to tell us. Maintaining what he contended was a "high" rather than a "low" discussion of this pivotal period of history, he chose only to speak of German, French, and Italian intellectuals, leaving out the contributions of the British, American, Spanish, Russian, or Scandinavian thinkers. He also deliberately chose to limit explanations about or comments on some pretty critical historical events -- like the Russian Revolution and World War I. And while he spent much time talking of positivism, rationalism, socialism, etc., there is little or no mention of fascism, nationalism, imperialism, industrialism, and other "isms" that figure powerfully into this time period.

Cooking the Austrian Way (Easy Menu Ethnic Cookbooks)
Published in Library Binding by Lerner Publications Company (January, 2004)
Author: Helga Hughes
Average review score:

Not just a cookbook for kids!
This is a wonderful book for anyone, of any age, to learn some traditional Austrian recipes. It gives you the "basics" that you need to know. In other words....Classic, easy, (and quite tasty) recipes that can be easily made in the American kitchen.

"Cooking The Austrian Way" is not packed with hundreds of recipes. However, it does contain a few classic recipes. It is a great start to Austrian cooking.

This book is said to be for "Ages 9 to 12".... I am 26 years old and highly recommend this informative and fun book to anyone of any age. If you want to try your hand at cooking "The Austrian Way", definitely get your hands on this book!

The Darkness Before the Dawn (Chronicles of Athas, Book 2)
Published in Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (February, 1995)
Author: Ryan Hughes
Average review score:

Simple review
I thought it was a pretty good book even though in my opinion the first book in The Chronicles of Athas was better. I liked the way they could fight using psionic power without having to do it physically. Its a good book if you enjoy reading about fantasy worlds where dwarfs, elves and all sort of other things live and can use magic and mental powers.

Discovering Our Roots: The Ancestry of Churches of Christ
Published in Hardcover by Abilene Christian Univ Pr (May, 1988)
Authors: C. Leonard Allen and Richard T. Hughes
Average review score:

Concise, to the point and easy to read!
This book gives a quick look at the major forces shaping the religious movement called the restoration movement and how the churches of Christ fit into the overall picture. Members of the churches of Christ (or anyone really) can gain much from seeing the similarities and differences between themselves and the men and women of the past who spent their lives asking many of the same questions and came up with many of the same answers. Be inspired by people who gave their lives for truth, purity and their convictions.
